The Divine Interconnectedness of Scripture

A few years ago, computer scientist Dr. Chris Harrison in collaboration with Christoph Römhild, a Lutheran pastor, created a remarkable computer visualization of 63,779 of the about 340,000 cross-references found in the Bible (see a visualization of all 340,000 cross-references here).

A cross-reference is a note placed alongside scripture that references another scripture; it provides a more full, whole Bible view on a verse or theme (similar to how articles on Wikipedia all reference and interlink each other in a vast web of knowledge).

Here is Dr. Harrison’s explanation:
“The bar graph that runs along the bottom represents all of the chapters in the Bible ... The length of each bar denotes the number of verses in the chapter. Each of the 63,779 cross references found in the Bible is depicted by a single arc – the color corresponds to the distance between the two chapters, creating a rainbow-like effect.”
This beautiful, comprehensive, and strikingly symmetrical diagram provides a wonderful representation of the unity, harmony, and consistency of the Bible in spite of its great diversity and complexity. Consider the fact that the 66 books of the Bible were written over the course of 1,500 years by 40 authors who lived on 3 different continents, in sometimes radically different cultures, and spoke 3 different languages!


From its interconnectedness to the overwhelming archaeological evidence, none of which has ever contradicted a single claim the Old and New Testament makes, there is no doubt the Bible is the inspired Word of God.   2. aren't the books of the bible in a weird order though, not chronological but arranged weirdly by type/size? like paul's letters and the old testament prophets

    • The interactive graph does indeed display cross-references in the Bible. If you could provide me with a specific example of what you believe is a contradiction in the Bible, I would be happy to provide an explanation.
